Designing A Pet Toy for Busy Pet Parents

My team and I created a way to keep pets busy and rewarded when their owners are away.

⛰ The Challenge

Pet owners face a challenge finding durable, engaging dog toys that withstand wear and tear while keeping their dogs interested. Developing a long-lasting toy that remains captivating can provide a reliable, value-driven solution to enhance playtime and reduce frequent replacements.

🧗🏻‍♀️ My Role

I was the designer, guiding us through research, market analysis, sketches and ideation!

Final Product

The final product is an interactive LED pet toy inspired by Simon Says, which lights up in random patterns. When the pet presses the correct illuminated button, the toy dispenses a treat, combining fun, engagement, and reward-based play.

How We Did It

The First Prototype

The first prototype was constructed using cardboard, including handmade cardboard springs, to minimize costs and test the initial design without significant investment.

Learning Space

To refine the pet toy design, focus on three key areas:
Reservoir Design
– Develop a functional treat reservoir and determine the optimal mechanism for treat dispensing. Explore different methods to ensure smooth and consistent delivery.

Button Construction – Design the buttons as enclosed cases with thinner walls to allow for better responsiveness and durability.

Spring Placement – Precisely position springs within the buttons to ensure they fully bounce back after being pressed, enhancing the overall functionality and longevity of the toy.

Final Product

After long sessions of further research and brainstorming, I created a product that would be similar to a Chrome plug-in. Our platform is small but mighty, where it is responsive and can be minimized while viewing integrated EHR systems.

Our system will read and analyze the EHR system for patient records but will not store the data, ensuring HIPAA compliance. Instead, the selected diagnosis, billing codes and generated patient notes will be sent to an email or phone number for the user's records.
The now integrated plugin organizes dense information into cards and sections to promote a smoother user experience.
